Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reveals major Jadon Sancho issue at Man Utd: 'That's not come out'
Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has broken his silence on Jadon Sancho's turbulent spell at Old Trafford. The England winger arrived at United during the summer of 2021, but struggled to establish himself under both Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim.
Following disagreements with two separate bosses, he has been shipped out on three different temporary moves, initially returning to former club Borussia Dortmund, where he helped fire the German giants to the Champions League final.
His loan switch to Chelsea last term included a £25million obligation-to-buy clause. Yet the Blues opted to pay a fifth of that sum as a penalty fee rather than make the deal permanent.
Sancho was back in Manchester this summer before being farmed out to Aston Villa. The 25-year-old has managed just eight outings for Unai Emery's outfit so far, failing to find the net or register an assist.
Villa hold no obligation or option to secure him permanently at the season's end, leaving him free to choose his next destination. Former Red Devils frontman Solskjaer has now reflected on Sancho's initial period at United, having been in charge when the Manchester City academy product joined in July 2021.
"The club did [chase Sancho] he was the best option that we had," Solskjaer revealed on Stick to Football. "We wanted to take the next step, not from moving away but add in the last third players that could break teams down. Jadon's skill, link-up play, he offered something different and he was unlucky, before he came he went on holiday and then all this diving but he got an infection in his ear so he was in hospital.
"He really struggled his first 10 days before he could start with us in pre-season before he come to United. That's not come out but he's struggled.
"I never managed to play with him because I was out before he was on fire again."
Solskjaer was given the boot by United in November 2021 following the Red Devils' humiliating 4-1 defeat at Watford.
Ralf Rangnick stepped in as caretaker manager for the remainder of the campaign before Ten Hag assumed control the subsequent summer.
