Oliver Tree, 'Life Goes On' and 'Miss You' singer, dies at 32 in tragic helicopter crash
Oliver Tree, the chart-topping musician and comedian who skyrocketed to fame after going viral with his 2017 track "When I'm Down," has died in a helicopter crash in Brazil. He was 32.
Tree was among six killed when two helicopters collided in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, in the Southwest zone of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Sunday morning, according to reports from multiple outlets including the Associated Press and CNN Brazil. There were no survivors.
Per CNN, the two helicopters were flying over an electric vehicle yard when the crash occurred. At least 20 cars were set ablaze after being hit at the crash site. Authorities have stated that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the collision.
The other victims include passengers Lucas Vignale, Gaspar Prim (also known as Argentinian YouTuber Gaspi), Lucas Brito Chaves, and pilots Alexandre Souza and Charles Marsillac.
Born Oliver Tree Nickell on June 29, 1993, in Santa Cruz, Calif., the singer initially captured online attention by creating the alter ego "Turbo" on Vine, recognizable for his signature bowl cut, oversized clothing and eccentric persona. The release of his 2017 single "When I'm Down" boosted Tree further, leading him to sign with Atlantic Records.
The following year, Tree's EP, Alien Boy, gained him even more acclaim. He wrote and directed an accompanying double music video, "All That x Alien,” which amassed over 50 million views. Tree went on to release four albums with Atlantic Records: Ugly Is Beautiful (2020), Cowboy Tears (2022), Alone in a Crowd (2023), and his fourth and final, Love You Madly, Hate You Badly, which dropped in April. He previously released an independent album, Splitting Branches, in 2013.
