Palestine's envoy hopes for stronger, more united Indonesia

Palestinian Ambassador to Indonesia, Zuhair Al-Shun, expressed his hope for Indonesia to remain united and continue growing stronger during a flag-raising ceremony commemorating the nation’s 80th Independence Day.

“Congratulations on the anniversary of Independence Day. I hope Indonesia will always be strong, united, and continue to advance,” he said at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Sunday (August 17).

He also shared his appreciation for being able to join President Prabowo Subianto and representatives from other nations at the commemorative event, which reenacted the historic proclamation of Indonesia’s independence by Soekarno and Mohammad Hatta on August 17, 1945.

“It is a great honor for me to witness this Independence Day celebration. On behalf of the Palestinian people, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Honorable Mr. President, the Indonesian government, and the people of Indonesia,” he added.

When asked about Indonesia’s plan to evacuate and provide medical treatment for wounded Palestinians on Galang Island in Riau Islands Province, the ambassador declined to comment.

Earlier that morning, President Prabowo presided over his first national Independence Day ceremony as head of state, followed by a flag-lowering ceremony in the afternoon.

The events drew approximately 16,000 attendees to the palace, most of whom were members of the general public.
